Meulstroom Lodge FAQ
Frequently asked questions
(a.k.a. the things everyone’s secretly wondering but your ‘tannie’ actually asked out loud)
Q: Why can’t we bring our own alcohol onto the premises?
A: As much as we love a good blue plastic cooler box, our liquor license says absolutely not. It’s one of those legal things – like taxes, or pants in public. But hey, our bar is stocked, chilled, and manned by people who actually know the difference between a Castle Light and a Castle FREE.
Q: Why are check-in and check-out times so strict?
A: We’d love to be more relaxed about this, but our housekeeping team are superheroes—not magicians. We need time to make your room sparkle (and find any socks the last guest left behind). Help us help you check into a room that feels like it was made just for you. Because it was. A few hours ago.
Q: Why is the buffet only open for 1 hour during meal times?
A: Our buffet is open for 1 hour to keep the food fresh, hot and safe for everyone.
We would love to leave it open all day, but then the chicken gets tired, the potatoes lose hope, and our kitchen team starts giving us that look.
Please arrive during the meal times shared with your group or wedding party. Once the buffet closes, our team needs to clear, clean and prepare for the next service.
Q: Why can’t we play music after 10pm?
We know a good weekend needs good music, but loud music is not allowed after 10pm, unless it is part of an approved wedding reception.
For wedding receptions, music may continue until 12:00 midnight inside the reception venue, according to the wedding arrangements.
After that, the party volume needs to come down — otherwise our neighbours, the wildlife, and possibly a few tired uncles may start filing complaints.
Please help us keep the celebration enjoyable for everyone by respecting the music cut-off times.
Q: Why do we have to sign indemnity forms?
A: Think of it as the grown-up version of “I promise not to sue if I try to ride a zebra and it doesn’t end well.” The indemnity form helps protect the lodge, our team, and your fellow guests by setting clear boundaries and responsibilities. It’s standard in the hospitality world—and much less exciting than it sounds. No hidden clauses, just a little legal housekeeping so we can all focus on the fun stuff.
Q: Why do we recommend bringing cash for the shop and bar?
A: Meulstroom is situated in a countryside area, and every now and then the signal can drop without warning. When that happens, our card machines may struggle to connect, especially during busy periods at the shop or bar.
We do have card facilities at the lodge, but we strongly recommend that guests bring some cash along for wedding weekends, school groups and functions.
We promise we are not trying to bring back the 1800s — sometimes the signal just decides to take a little holiday of its own.
Having cash available helps avoid frustration, long queues and awkward moments when the signal disappears at exactly the wrong time.
Q: Why do we pay a set amount for accommodation & meals for weddings?
A: When a couple books their big day with us, they go all in—literally! All 54 rooms are reserved as part of our exclusive wedding package, creating a private little paradise for the celebration. We don’t charge per room or per guest; instead, the bridal party pays a set amount upfront to lock it all in. From there, it’s up to them to decide how they want to divvy things up and collect from their guests. Think of it as their first official act of teamwork before saying “I do.”
Q: Why does the Bar close at 23:45?
A: We like to think of it as a gentle nudge to swap brandy specials for campfire chats and enjoy the starry skies. Plus, our bartenders need their beauty sleep too—so they’re ready to shake, stir, and serve again tomorrow. Closing at 23:45 is also part of a friendly agreement with the neighbouring lodges and resorts to keep things peaceful for everyone in the area. So sip up, finish up the pool game, and let the night wind down in style.
Q: Do you ever experience power outages?
Yes, from time to time we do experience power outages. It is usually not load shedding, but rather unexpected area faults caused by things like cable theft, stormy weather, or electrical cables causing issues when bad weather moves through the area.
The good news is that Meulstroom Lodge has a generator that automatically switches on when the power goes off, so we can keep the important parts of the lodge running as smoothly as possible.
That being said, when Eskom or the weather decides to test everyone’s patience, there may be a short change-over period while the generator starts up.
So yes, the power may blink — but we don’t just sit in the dark and hope for the best.
